Joshua vs Fury is on! Announcement next week!
Sources have revealed that there will be an announcement involving Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury in regards to the blockbuster event putting these two rivals in the ring. It is reported that the announcement will take place in London and it will be on Friday.
News had circulated over the past several weeks that the fight between Joshua and Fury would be held in Madison Square Garden in New York City, but there were a few roadblocks that prevented that from becoming official. The main roadblock was that Anthony Joshua and Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn pushed for the fight to be held in the United Kingdom. They felt that the fans in the region “deserved” the superfight and that it should not be held anywhere else. However, given the fact that Joshua himself has had multiple fights in Saudi Arabia since 2019 and that Matchroom Boxing would not be the lead promoter in this event, it opened the possibility of the fight not being in the United Kingdom. The other issue that was being reported was that the event would have potentially had Zuffa Boxing and Dana White as the lead promoter for the event if it was held in the United States. Hearn is not in favor of having White be the lead promoter of a fight pitting two of the most popular fighters in the history of the United Kingdom.
Both Joshua and Fury had signed a good faith agreement along with Matchroom and Queensberry to have the fight, but Sela was the group that orchestrated the agreement along with Netflix who will be providing the money for this fight to take place. Netflix has been ready to televise the fight as they have held events involving Joshua and Fury over the past several months, and they were looking to stage the fight in Madison Square Garden in November. Now it looks like the event will be moved to the United Kingdom, and we could potentially see it in Cardiff on the following month – in the first or second Saturday in December. It will be promoted by Goldstar Promotions who is headed by Spencer Brown. Goldstar has been involved with events on Netflix in the past, such as Fury’s fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.
This would be great news for fans in the United Kingdom, but it is rare that events of this magnitude are held this late in the year. Fury has fought in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in December of 2022 against Derek Chisora and that was under muggy conditions. As a result, this fight between Joshua and Fury would likely be in Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. It is the only major stadium in the United Kingdom with a fully retractable roof, which Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium cannot provide.
More news involving this bout will be provided over the next few days.
