The Rumor Mill: Opponent offered for Vergil Ortiz was rejected?
The super welterweight division has been of interest in these past few months as there have been key fights that have taken place to sort out who would be considered in the top five. One bout that was on the docket was Tim Tszyu vs Vergil Ortiz that was scheduled for August 3rd…however the cut that Tszyu suffered in March scrapped that fight from happening. In an earlier entry on The Rumor Mill, there were two fighters that had been mentioned as potential replacements for Tszyu to be an opponent for Vergil Ortiz – Bakhram Murtazaliev and Serhii Bohachuk. While we know that Vergil Ortiz is not on the card on August 3rd, the latest buzz is that he could have had a bout with one of those fighters.
What has been rumored is that Vergil Ortiz would have been facing Serhii Bohachuk with the WBC interim title on the line but it was shot down. The parties involved seemed to be all in on making that fight happen, but apparently it was blocked and because of that, Ortiz is completely out of the card that will take place at BMO Stadium on August 3rd. Ortiz’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya seemed to post some words in reference to Ortiz potentially being involved in another bout, but that remains to be seen.
For Bohachuk, it would have been an opportunity to build his resume in the super welterweight division coming off of his win against Brian Mendoza in March. Since his lone loss to Brandon Adams, he has won six straight bouts and become a top five fighter in the division. A bout against Ortiz may have gotten him one step closer to a world title opportunity, but with this bout being scrapped it is unknown when Bohachuk could get a high profile fight.
NOTE – The Rumor Mill will be a part of The Boxing Source website where news on potential fights or updates on confirmed fights will be posted. There may be details on these fights or it may just be early news about fights that could be made. This will be posted at least twice a month.
