The Rumor Mill: Another homecoming fight for Keyshawn?
Last month, the boxing world witnessed a crowning of a new champion as Keyshawn Davis stopped Denys Berinchyk in New York City to win the WBO lightweight title. Keyshawn has had a number of great performances over the past year as he got wins over Jose Pedraza, Miguel Madueno, and Gustavo Lemos before his bout against Berinchyk. As a result, he has been one of the fastest rising young fighters in the sport.
The bout that he had against Lemos was a huge success at the Scope Arena in Norfolk which is his hometown. The arena was sold out, and the fans enjoyed the fight card from start to finish. With the amount of success that the event had there have been rumblings that they could have Keyshawn Davis come back to Norfolk for another fight.
The Boxing Source has talked with representatives close to Top Rank over the past few months, and they have hinted on multiple occasions that they would not mind having Keyshawn fight again in his hometown. Now there is word that they could be close to making that happen…it is possible that Keyshawn’s first defense of the WBO lightweight title could be at his hometown in the summer. If this does come to fruition, it would grant the wishes of the world champion who loved being able to headline a fight card last November.
“Take me back to Norfolk,” Davis stated in our interview before he fought Berinchyk. “That was the best experience that I had in my life in boxing.”
Top Rank has a lot planned for Keyshawn, and it was stated by hall of fame matchmaker Brad Goodman that he is the future of boxing. After his win in New York City last month, he could be well on his way to fulfilling that assessment.
