Rematch set between Conceição and Foster for November 2nd
The WBC super featherweight title fight that took place in Newark a couple months ago yielded a controversial result as Robson Conceição got a decision over O’Shaquie Foster to win the belt. Now they will meet again, headlining a Top Rank fight card on November 2nd at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York.
“Conceição and Foster are eager to prove themselves following their initial fight,” said Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum. “This rematch is about setting things straight. Both want to show who the better man is, which will make for an exciting, competitive matchup, with the winner positioning himself for a chance at a unification bout.”
Conceição (19-2-1, 9 KOs) will make his first title defense after winning the belt on his fourth try. He lost to Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson, and had a draw with Emmanuel Navarrete before facing Foster in July. The 2016 Olympic gold medalist from Brazil is looking forward to this bout as he wants to make it clear that he is the better fighter.
“I’m fully focused and ready for my first title defense,” he said. “Every fight is a new opportunity to prove myself, and on November 2nd, I’ll step into the ring with the same determination and hunger that brought me here. I respect O’Shaquie Foster, but I will show why I’m the true champion.”
Foster (23-3, 12 KOs) had been the WBC champion for over a year as he defeated Rey Vargas for the title in San Antonio. He defended the belt twice against Eduardo Hernandez in Mexico and Abraham Nova in New York City before his first bout with Conceição. For this rematch, Foster is aiming to prove that he has always been the better fighter.
“I can’t wait for November 2nd,” Foster said. “I’m ready to go out there and make a statement. That bad decision woke something up in me, and now all I can think about is the ‘get back.’ I want to thank everybody who pushed for the right thing to be done. Now the focus is to become a two-time champion.”
The bout will be preceded by Raymond Muratalla against Jesus Perez in the co-feature bout, and will also include Abraham Nova versus Humberto Galindo plus Bryce Mills against Hank Lundy in the undercard. All bouts will be televised live on ESPN+.
