Isaac Lucero ready for spotlight on May 2nd
Over the past several months Isaac “Puro México” Lucero has been impressive in his road to being a top contender in the super welterweight division. Last year Lucero got two stoppage victories over Omar Valenzuela and Roberto Valenzuela Jr. which has put him as high as #4 in the WBA rankings. Now he is weeks away from facing Alan Sandoval kicking off the Benavidez vs. Zurdo PBC Pay-Per-View event on May 2nd from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Lucero (18-0, 14 KOs) will face his third undefeated opponent in his pro career in Sandoval (30-0-1, 19 KOs) and has been working hard in camp for this challenge.
“My time in Las Vegas with Coach Santos has been very productive,” Lucero said. “Bob is a teacher of the sport in the truest sense, he refines not only your technique, but your understanding of what it takes to be a champion. This camp has been about elevating every detail. We’ve focused on discipline, championship mentality, and ring intelligence.”
That intelligence is what he aims to incorporate on May 2nd against the fellow Mexican.
“Sandoval comes from a part of Mexico that I’m very familiar with, so I know he’s coming to fight. I respect what he has accomplished, but I also believe this is the kind of fight that reveals who is truly ready to take the next step.”
Cinco de Mayo weekend is known as the biggest weekend in boxing and ever since Lucero knew that he would be part of this May 2nd card he has increased his level of focus for his fight against Sandoval.
“To fight in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo Weekend, on a card that celebrates Mexican fighters, is both an honor and a responsibility. This is a moment that carries me on to the global stage, it represents pride, history, and identity. I come from Baja California Sur, Mexico, and I carry that with me into every fight. I intend to represent my country with dignity, with heart, and with a performance that reflects the tradition of Mexican boxing.”
The 27 year old has worked hard to get to this point and wants to get a world title shot in due time. With a win over Sandoval he would be knocking on the door for that opportunity, but Lucero also is fighting for those from his area that look up to him.
“A victory in this fight would be significant, not only for my career but for the people who have supported me from the beginning. This moment is about opening doors for myself, for my team, and for young fighters who are watching and believing that they can follow a similar path. I want to give them something to be proud of.”
