Haney vs Prograis confirmed for December 9th

After negotiations that lasted weeks, an agreement was made between Devin Haney and Regis Prograis to have a fight that will take place on December 9th. The Chase Center in downtown San Francisco will be the host venue for the bout. It will be for the WBC super lightweight title, currently held by Prograis.

Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is moving up a division after winning and defending the undisputed lightweight championship. His win over George Kambosos Jr. last June crowned him as the undisputed champion, then four months later he won the rematch in a more convincing fashion. Following those victories he scored a decision win over Vasyl Lomachenko in Las Vegas. While he currently resides in Vegas, this bout against Prograis will be in his hometown of San Francisco and that has been one thing that he has wished for in his career.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Haney. “It’s been a dream of mine to fight in my hometown. I’m excited for the opportunity to become two-division World champion in The City [The Bay] where it all started.”

Haney knows that it may be a difficult task going up against a two-time champion at super lightweight, but he is confident that he will make a statement by getting a victory.

“On paper this is a tough fight because it’s my first fight at a heavier weight division. I’m comfortable with the plan have. God willing, I’m going to be stronger and faster than ever. I’m going to dominate him, and the super lightweight division will be put on notice.”

Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) got his second world title at super lightweight by stopping Jose Zepeda last November. He is coming off a hometown performance of his own, defeating Danielito Zorilla in New Orleans in April. Prograis has been one of the top fighters in the division for the past few years, but for this fight against Haney he wants to show more than that.

“Devin has done well at 135lbs,” said Prograis, “but I’m the best in the world at 140lbs and I will prove that once again!”

When there was talk about Haney moving up to super lightweight since his win over Lomachenko, Prograis was often being brought up as an opponent. Now that the fight is official, Prograis wants people to know that choosing him was a mistake.

“I will not only beat him, but I will beat him up. I will hurt this kid. It’s nothing he can do that’s going to stop me from dominating. It’s going to be a massacre.”
