Fighting in Photos: Kelvin Davis scores knockdown en route to decision win

NORFOLK – In his third fight in 2024 and his first pro fight in his hometown, Kelvin “Nite Nite” Davis had little trouble with his opponent as his height and reach were too much for Yeis Solano over eight rounds. Kelvin defeated Solano by unanimous decision (80-71, 79-72 twice) to improve his record to 14-0 and Solano suffered his fourth defeat in his career (15-4).

In the first few rounds Davis kept Solano at a distance and landed the jab often, while avoiding the counters that Solano attempted to land. After Davis landed a few combinations, Solano was unwilling to trade with Davis for the majority of the fight and he was settling to move around the ring. Near the end of the fourth round, Davis stunned Solano with a left hand but ran out of time to score a knockdown. Following that Solano continued to move around the ring with his back to the ropes and Davis kept his composure and carried out his gameplan.

There wasn’t much resistance from Solano in the sixth round, but then he started to come forward in the seventh and landed a few punches on Davis. It wasn’t enough to shift the momentum in his favor and in the final round Davis caught Solano with a two punch combination before the end of the fight to put Solano to the canvas.

After getting the decision win, Kelvin Davis brought up the lack of activity from Solano in the first half of the fight.

“In the beginning he wasn’t coming to fight,” Davis said. “As the fight kept going he came to fight and it made it more interesting. I had to give the hometown crowd something. I had to give them a good show.”

Davis also talked about the amount of support that Norfolk showed to him and his brothers.

“This is amazing. A lot of people counted me out, said that I wouldn’t be here but look at me now. I’m right here with my brothers doing something big for the city.”
