Resendiz-Munguia among three fights added to May 2nd card
WBA super middleweight champion Armando Resendiz will make his first defense of that title on May 2nd against former two division champion Jaime Munguia, which will be the co-main event to David Benavidez versus Gilberto Ramirez at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will be part of the PBC Pay-Per-View telecast available on Prime Video. This event will also have Oscar Duarte take on Angel Fierro in the welterweight division, and Isaac Lucero going up against Alan Sandoval.
Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) scored one of the biggest upsets in 2025 with his win over former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant last May to become the WBA interim champion. The 27 year old Mexican was recently elevated to full WBA champion and looks to rise to the top of the division and could make a case with a win over Munguia.
“I’m very happy to be stepping into the ring with a great fighter like Jaime Munguia, who’s been competing at this level for a long time,” Resendiz said. “For me, this is a big challenge and a huge motivation. These are the kinds of fights I’ve always dreamed about.”
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) is a former world champion in the super welterweight division and has been a contender in the super middleweight division for a few years. In 2024, he fought for the undisputed title against Canelo Alvarez but fell short. Munguia avenged a December 2024 loss to Bruno Sarace by winning a unanimous decision in the rematch last May. Now he is in a position to win a world title at super middleweight and he is thankful for this opportunity on May 2nd.
“I’m very excited to be back, especially to fight for a world title against a fellow Mexican,” said Munguía. “I’m truly grateful to my team, and everyone who made this fight possible. We’re ready to come out victorious on this great night for Mexico!”
In the super lightweight division, Duarte (30-2-1, 23 KOs) has a four fight win streak including a decision over Kenneth Sims Jr. Fighting out of Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, the 30 year old contender was in position to fight for the IBF title against Richardson Hitchins in February. However, that fight did not take place due to Hitchins falling ill. Duarte is #3 in the IBF rankings and he wants to stay in the world title picture in the division.
“I’m very happy and motivated for this fight on May 2 in Las Vegas,” said Duarte. “This is a great event that falls on a very meaningful date for all Mexicans, which makes it even more special to me.”
He looks forward to facing his Mexican counterpart in Las Vegas.
“I can’t wait to face another Mexican warrior who’s already proven his talent and courage in the ring,” Duarte said. “We’re both going to give it everything we have and I’m sure it will be a war that fans will truly enjoy.”
Fierro (23-4-2, 18 KOs) was born in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico but now resides in San Diego. He is known for his aggressive fighting style and giving fight fans some exciting moments. His bout against Isaac Cruz last February was a Fight of the Year candidate. Now he returns to the same arena as that classic bout to get back in the win column against Duarte.
“I’m very grateful to my team for this great opportunity,” said Fierro. “We’re ready to return to Las Vegas and deliver a great fight and a surprise, just like we do every time we step into the ring.”
“I want to make a statement that I’m still among the elite. I have a lot of respect for Oscar Duarte, we’ve trained in the same gym before, so I know this fight is going to be explosive.”
Isaac Lucero (18-0, 14 KOs) is a 27 year old fighter from La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. He is rated #3 in the WBA at super welterweight, and last year he scored two stoppage victories over Omar Valenzuela and Roberto Valenzuela Jr. Currently he resides in Las Vegas where he is trained by renowned coach Bob Santos. On May 2nd, “Puro México” looks to take advantage of being in a big stage.

This card will be ‘Puro México!’”
Hailing from Nochistlan, Zacatecas, Mexico, Alan Sandoval (30-0-1, 19 KOs) wants to make the most out of his first pro bout in the US. The 30 year old won four fights in 2025, and scored a TKO win in February. Sandoval has 13 knockout victories in his last 14 fights, and he is convinced that his power will be the key to victory on May 2nd.
“I’m highly motivated by this tremendous opportunity and I have no intention of letting it slip away,” said Sandoval. “I have more experience than Isaac and I’ve been having the best training camp of my career. Competing in an event Cinco de Mayo Weekend is a dream come true. Neither of us wants to lose, but I am confident I will be the one walking away with my hand raised.”
