Canelo-Charlo undercard set with Ramos-Lubin as co-feature

Three bouts have been added to the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo card on September 30th as contenders in various weight classes and former champions will be included in the pay-per-view portion of the event that will be televised by Showtime.

Jesus Ramos Jr. will take on former world title challenger Erickson Lubin in the co-feature bout before the Canelo-Charlo main event. It will be preceded by a bout for the interim WBC welterweight title as former WBA champion Yordenis Ugas faces Mario Barrios, and the pay-per-view opener will have Elijah Garcia against Armando Resendiz in the middleweight division.

Ramos (20-0, 16 KOs) last appearance in the ring was a dominant stoppage victory over Joey Spencer in March as he scored a knockdown in the first round and was not in any trouble during that bout. The 22 year old native of Casa Grande, Arizona also has wins over Vladimir Hernandez and current interim WBC super welterweight champion Brian Mendoza. He is ranked in the top five of the WBC, IBF, and WBO rankings and in the top 10 in the WBA.

“I’m excited to be part of this huge card against a tough opponent on September 30th,” said Ramos. “I know Lubin is training hard and coming to win, which will make for an entertaining fight. This whole card is stacked and we don’t want to disappoint, so the fans are in for a great night of boxing.”

Lubin (25-2, 18 KOs) has been around the top of the super welterweight division as a former world title challenger and been involved in high level bouts at the weight class. In June, he scored a fifth round TKO win over Luis Arias after a tough loss last year to Sebastian Fundora. Lubin has beaten guys such as former unified champion Jeison Rosario, Nathaniel Gallimore, and Terrell Gausha over the course of his career which is approaching ten years. He believes that a win will put him back in world title contention.

“I know the world will be watching on September 30th and I plan on winning in a big way,” said Lubin. “We’ve got a young and talented fighter in front of us, but I’m young and talented as well. The difference is that I’ve fought the cream of the crop of the 154-pound division. I have a big chip on my shoulder and I know that with this win, I’ll be in a mega fight.”

The interim WBC welterweight title fight between Ugas and Barrios could determine who would be in the top five of the division. Ugas (27-5, 12 KOs) had been the WBA welterweight champion, defeating Abel Ramos in 2020 before scoring the win over Manny Pacquaio. The Cuban has not been in the ring since his defeat to Errol Spence Jr. last April but hopes to get back in the hunt in the division with a win over Barrios.

“I have tremendous respect for Barrios. He’s a true warrior who’s been in the ring with the best of them, but I have confidence that I’ll be victorious,” Ugas said on his upcoming bout. “I have a lot of fight left in me and my best skills will be on display in this fight.”

Barrios (27-2, 18 KOs) became a contender in the welterweight division with an eighth round stoppage victory over Jovanie Santiago in his hometown of San Antonio in February. The former champion at super lightweight had suffered two consecutive losses to Gervonta Davis and Keith Thurman, but with the win over Santiago he was able to be ranked fifth in the WBC. He expects a fight full of action against Ugas on September 30th.

“This fight is going to be a war, because we both fight with a lot of heart and neither of us ever backs down,” said Barrios. “I can’t wait to compete in a matchup like this on one of the biggest cards of the year. This is going to be a great night of boxing from start to finish.”

Garcia (15-0, 12 KOs), the 20 year old from Phoenix will be in his third bout this year as he scored a knockout win over Amilcar Vidal Jr in March and a decision win over Kevin Salgado in April. He has six stoppage victories in his last eight bouts which has catapulted him up the middleweight rankings. As of today, Garcia is ranked 7th in the WBC, 9th in the WBA and IBF, and 14th in the WBO.

“This is my second fight this year on a huge pay-per-view card and I’m super excited and even more prepared than the first time,” Garcia said. “Reséndiz is a hungry fighter just like myself, so I have no doubt that we are going to put on a hell of a show for all the fans watching.”

Hailing from Nayarit, Mexico, the 24-year-old Reséndiz (14-1, 10 KOs) stopped former unified super welterweight champion Jarrett Hurd in March to get himself in position for this fight. His lone loss came in 2021 to Marcos Hernandez by decision but two stoppage wins have put him in a position to be in this card against Garcia. With this being his first bout in Las Vegas, the Mexican hopes to put on a show similar to the legends that he looks up to.

“I’m excited to realize my dream of fighting in Las Vegas, just like my boxing idols that I watched on TV,” Reséndiz said. “I’ve had an amazing training camp that will help me look my best on September 30th and put on a performance worthy of the boxing legends who inspire me.”
