Riyadh Fight Week – Rafael Espinoza joins Mariachis for Grand Arrivals

Amid the scrutiny surrounding Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli, a little music, laughter and Mexican tradition are bringing a welcome spirit of celebration to Riyadh.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Boxing week isn’t always about press conferences, predictions and controversy. Sometimes, it’s about putting the microphones aside, enjoying the moment and allowing the music to do the talking.
That was the scene in Riyadh as the festivities got underway for Mexico vs. The World, headlined by Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli on October 31. With a mariachi band performing for the crowd, reigning WBO featherweight world champion Rafael Espinoza stepped into the spotlight and joined in the singing, giving those in attendance a memorable moment away from the ring.
At 6-foot-1, Espinoza is an imposing presence in the featherweight division. But on this occasion, the champion offered a different kind of performance—one filled with good cheer, cultural pride and the simple enjoyment of being part of the celebration.
World-renowned ring announcer Thomas Treiber was also on hand as the grand arrivals brought fighters, guests and boxing personalities together for the week’s festivities.
The event has faced its share of scrutiny and negative headlines, as major boxing spectacles often do. Those discussions will continue, and legitimate questions deserve to be examined. But the atmosphere surrounding these arrivals also offers another perspective: people coming together through sport, music and shared excitement for the days ahead.
For the fighters, their teams and the fans gathered in Riyadh, fight week is more than a countdown to the opening bell. It’s an experience—with memories being made before anyone steps between the ropes.
And if Espinoza’s mariachi moment is any indication, there’s already plenty to celebrate.
Sometimes, the best moments in boxing happen before the first bell rings.
