A Look Back: Treiber Reflects on “Mexico vs The World”
The voice of Riyadh Season discusses a memorable weekend in Saudi Arabia, working alongside Michael Buffer, and why he believes Hamzah Sheeraz could be next for Canelo Alvarez.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was the setting for another major boxing occasion this past weekend as Riyadh Season presented “Mexico vs. The World,” headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Christian Mbilli.
The October 31 event brought together fighters from several countries, with a nine-bout professional card at The Venue. The festivities surrounding fight night included fighter arrivals, media appearances, photo sessions, a press conference, ceremonial weigh-ins and face-offs, providing several days of activity leading into Saturday’s main event.
For Thomas Treiber, the experience was another opportunity to serve as the voice of Riyadh Season, a role he has held for the past three years. The veteran ring announcer was on hand for the occasion, working alongside fellow announcing legend Michael Buffer.
Speaking about the event, Treiber described it as a memorable moment that delivered on several fronts.
“It was a fantastic event that featured the biggest star in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, and it delivered in a resounding way! The card featured the potential knockout of the year as well as round of the year, and the future Hall of Famer Canelo Alvarez became a three-time super middleweight champion. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!”
Treiber also spoke about the experience of sharing the announcing duties with Buffer and working with the team behind the production.
“It’s always a joy to work alongside the living legend Michael Buffer in announcing this spectacular event. And Canelo Promotions did an amazing job, and they were a real joy to work with.”
Trieber also addressed the precautions surrounding the event.
“I understand the precautionary measures that were taken, but everyone had a great time who was in attendance, and credit to everyone involved, Mexico vs The World went off without a hitch!”
Treiber Predicts Sheeraz To Be Canelo’s Next Opponent
With the event now behind him, attention turns to what comes next for Alvarez.
Canelo has indicated that he would like to return to the ring as early as February 2027. While no opponent has been officially confirmed, Treiber offered his prediction when asked who he believes could be next for the Mexican superstar.
“Canelo obviously has the final say, but if I had to guess, I would say the plan is for the former WBO super middleweight title holder Hamzah Sheeraz to be the final opponent on Canelo’s lucrative deal with Riyadh Season and Turki Alalshikh.”
Sheeraz, who previously held the WBO super middleweight title, is the name Treiber believes could be next in line. Whether that matchup takes place in February, March, or at another point remains to be determined.
For now, Treiber’s comments provide his perspective on a possible direction for Alvarez as the Mexican star looks toward the next chapter of his career.
Three Years Of Being The Voice Of Riyadh Season
Treiber has spent nearly a decade working with Queensberry Promotions, and has been involved in the boxing business for more than three decades. Previously, Treiber had a career as a professional wrestler.
Reflecting on his experience as the voice of Riyadh Season, Treiber described the opportunity as something he never takes for granted.
“It has virtually been a dream come true, and a genuine honor just to be mentioned alongside these talented and brave warriors in the ring, as well as, in my opinion, the most respected and renowned ring announcer in boxing’s rich history, Michael Buffer.”
Treiber also shared his thoughts on Turki Alalshikh and his involvement in boxing.
“I wish everyone in this business were as passionate as His Excellency. It would be a much healthier sport as a result. No one wants to see this business and this sport succeed more than Turki Alalshikh. Not only for the fans, the real bosses of boxing, but all the fighters as well. He genuinely loves this sport!”
Queensberry Promotions and The Fans
Outside of his work in Saudi Arabia, Queensberry Promotions has remained an important part of Treiber’s professional life.
“Queensberry Promotions has been my home in boxing for almost a decade, and since I’ve been a part of Queensberry, I’ve learned so much. Frank Warren is a Hall of Famer for a reason and is truly the best promoter in all of boxing. And I can’t wait to see what he does next.”
Treiber also reserved praise for the supporters who attend boxing events all over the United Kingdom.
“My hat’s off to the best boxing fans pound for pound in the entire world! Their passion and their support is unrivaled anywhere! They’re the ones who make the events as exciting as they are. I absolutely love them, and look forward to seeing all of their faces as I am exiting or entering every big-time event! They are truly a special group!”
For a man who has spent more than three decades in the entertainment and boxing business, the opportunity to stand in the ring and introduce some of the sport’s biggest names remains a source of pride.
As Riyadh Season moves beyond another major boxing weekend, the next question surrounding Canelo Alvarez is the identity of his next opponent. Thomas Treiber has offered his prediction: Hamzah Sheeraz.
Canelo, however, will have the final say.
