Fighting in Photos: Zayas gets decision win to stay unbeaten

Xander Zayas (15-0, 10 KOs) defeated Alexis Salazar (25-5, 10 KOs) by unanimous decision to win the NABF super welterweight title and retain the NABO title. Two judges scored the bout 80-72 and one judge scored it 79-73 for the 20-year-old prospect from Puerto Rico.

Zayas had a fast start with a balanced attack that sent Salazar to the ropes early, but then Salazar responded to slow the momentum of Zayas. However, Zayas mixed up his offense with a focus on working the body to get the better of his opponent. In the late rounds Zayas pushed to get the stoppage but Salazar was able to get through the entire eight rounds.

“I give myself a nice B+,” Zayas said about his performance. “Little by little, we keep improving, keep getting better. But I feel like we can still work a little bit on everything. My distance. My punch output. My defense. My angles. Everything. I feel like we can improve on everything.”
