Ronnie Shields: “I don’t see anyone beating Boots at 147”

The recent news of Jaron “Boots” Ennis now facing David Avanesyan might have disappointed some fans, but there are many who feel that the opponent for Boots on July 13th would not have mattered…Boots would likely take care of business. He will be defending the IBF welterweight title on that day headlining a fight card in Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia giving local fans the opportunity to see a very talented fighter in the division. There are other fighters within the top ten such as Mario Barrios, Eimantas Stanionis, and Brian Norman Jr that could challenge for the top spot but few believe that they rank higher than Ennis. This thought was shared by Coach Ronnie Shields in a segment of his weekly show hosted by Joseph Herron.

“Boots is such a great fighter,” Shields said. “Avanesyan is a good fight, but that guy is not going to beat Boots. I don’t see anybody right now beating him at 147.”

That is a big acknowledgement given by the well known trainer and former fighter, and he added that only one fighter could compete with Boots in the division.

“Maybe if Terence Crawford decided back down to 147, but outside of that no one beats Boots.”

Ennis will be able to showcase his ability next month defending his title against Avanesyan.
