Former featherweight and super featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson (20-0) defeated Shuichiro Yoshino (16-1) via sixth round TKO in front of 10,408 in the Prudential Center at Stevenson’s hometown of Newark. It was the 10th knockout victory of Stevenson’s career. Over the course of the six rounds Stevenson was sharp in his offense and scored two knockdowns in the second and fourth rounds before referee Allen Huggins called a halt to the bout at the 1:35 mark of the sixth round.
The bout was a WBC eliminator bout in the lightweight division and Stevenson made a statement in his first bout at the weight class.
“Just tell all those other lightweights to get ready. I’m waiting for them. I can’t wait for them to finish the fights they’ve got going on, and then it’s my turn.”
