WBO super lightweight champion Josh Taylor will defend his title at The Theater at Madison Square Garden against former unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez on June 10th. This bout will be the headliner of a fight card promoted by Top Rank and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) is the former undisputed champion at super lightweight, known for winning the World Boxing Super Series to become a unified champion then defeating Jose Carlos Ramirez in 2021 to unify all four belts in the division. The Tartan Tornado has been waiting to get back in the ring since his split decision victory against Jack Catterall last February. Now he has a high profile bout against Lopez to get himself back in the mix and keep his spot at the top of the super lightweight division.
Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs) will have his second consecutive bout in the same building as he defeated Sandor Martin by split decision in his last bout in December of last year. The Brooklyn born fighter now resides in Las Vegas and has been getting back to winning ways after losing the lightweight titles to George Kambosos Jr. in November of 2021. Lopez stopped Pedro Campa last August, and the win over Martin put him in position to contend for the WBO super lightweight title.
Bob Arum, the chairman of Top Rank, believes that this is a huge bout that fight fans in the United States and the United Kingdom will enjoy.
“This is a super fight on both sides of the pond, the junior welterweight king in Josh Taylor stepping up against the young, dynamic Teofimo Lopez,” Arum said. “I cannot wait for these two supreme talents to step into the Madison Square Garden ring. It’s going to be a special night.”
