An exciting bout culminated in a big win for Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 18 KOs) as he became the undisputed super welterweight champion by defeating Brian Carlos Castaño (17-1-2, 12 KOs) by knockout in the tenth round in their rematch at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson California. A crowd of 7,406 saw a potential Fight of the Year as both fighters battled through some grueling rounds before Charlo pulled it out.
Charlo and Castaño traded blows early in this bout, including the opening round which also could qualify for Round of the Year with the amount of action that took place. The pace continued for a couple more rounds before Charlo adjusted by fighting off of his back foot. By being more patient and precise with his offense, Charlo was able to break down Castano until that penultimate round where he scored a knockdown at the 2 minute mark. Castaño got up from that but Charlo pressed on the attack, landing a left hook to the head and body to send Castaño to the canvas again. Referee Jerry Cantu felt at that point that Castaño could not continue, giving Charlo the victory.
