Oubaali-Donaire set for May 29th in California

The WBC bantamweight title fight between Nordine Oubaali and Nonito Donaire will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California on Saturday, May 29th headlining a fight card that will be aired on Showtime. This card is presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Oubaali (17-0, 12 KOs) is looking forward to making his third defense of the WBC bantamweight title against the former five division champion in Donaire (40-6, 26 KOs) who wants to get the WBC title once again. He held it back in 2011 before moving up to super bantamweight, and could regain a title at the 118 pound division after losing a classic bout to Naoya Inoue in November 2019. Oubaali won the WBC title over Rau’shee Warren in January 2019, with his last defense being in November of that year against Takuma Inoue.

These fighters were scheduled to battle last December but Oubaali came down with COVID-19 and had to withdraw from the fight. When that was announced, Donaire was going to fight Emmanuel Rodriguez for the interim WBC title but then Donaire tested positive for COVID-19. Oubaali was named “champion in recess” while he was out with the illness until he was healthy and then he was reinstated as champion, and now he will have that title defense against Donaire.

The chief support bout will feature Subriel Matias against Batyrzhan Jukembayev in a IBF super lightweight title eliminator bout. Matias is 16-1 coming off a stoppage victory over Malik Hawkins last October, while Jukembayev is 18-0 with 14 knockouts. His last encounter was a 2nd round knockout victory over Ricardo Lara.
