After becoming the winner of the World Boxing Super Series, unified super lightweight champion Josh Taylor was looking forward to big fights in 2020. Now that wish may be one step closer to being true.
Earlier today, Taylor signed a multi-year agreement with Top Rank Boxing and will have his first fight under the promotional banner be televised on ESPN soon. The “Tartan Tornado” is coming off his win over Regis Prograis which was one of the best fights in 2019 to unify the IBF and WBA “super” titles at 140 pounds. That win places him at the top of the division, and he is ready to get in gear under his new contract.
“A new year, a new decade with lots of new beginnings, and I’m starting this new decade with a big bang,” Taylor said. “2019 was a huge year for me, but 2020 looks set to be even bigger and I’m delighted to have signed a deal with Top Rank and ESPN and an advisory contract with MTK Global. I believe I am with the best team to take my career to the next level.”

This signing was a big addition to Top Rank, as they also have the WBC and WBO champion Jose Ramirez under contract. This sets the stage for a potential fight between Taylor and Ramirez for the undisputed super lightweight championship. That may have been one of the major factors as to why Top Rank wanted to add Taylor to their roster. Even so, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum feels that having Taylor is a great addition.
“Josh Taylor is one of the world’s best fighters, and he is a fight fan’s fighter, a tough guy willing to fight anyone we put in front of him,” said Arum. “Whether it’s Jose Ramirez in a fight for the undisputed junior welterweight title or any of the welterweights out there, he’s ready for the biggest challenges. I want to thank Josh’s advisors at MTK Global, who have the same goal as us, which is to make him an international star.”
With Taylor’s style being fan-friendly and having two of the major world titles at the weight, he is going to attract good crowds at his fights. MTK Global, who advises Taylor, now have the promotional backing of Top Rank to try to make him one of the most popular fighters in the sport. Taylor is very happy that Top Rank and MTK are working together for him to place his career to bigger heights.
“I couldn’t ask for a better partnership, and I know the future looks bright with this team lighting the way.”
