After winning a version of the super middleweight title in Madison Square Garden last month, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is getting back in the ring for a big fight at middleweight.
It has been announced that Alvarez, who holds the WBC, lineal, Ring Magazine, and WBA “super” titles at middleweight will defend them against IBF champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs on Saturday May 4th. It will be presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Matchroom Boxing.
Both Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) and Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) are considered by many as two of the best fighters in the middleweight division. Alvarez is coming off his win over Rocky Fielding in December, while Jacobs won the IBF title over Sergey Derevyanchenko in October. They are looking forward to this fight to show the world that they are the best at 160 pounds.
“I’m happy to announce my next fight during the festive weekend of Cinco de Mayo,” Alvarez said. “I will unify my middleweight titles against Daniel Jacobs on one of the two most important dates that belong to me. I have no doubt that I will be victorious and that I’ll be one step away from becoming the undisputed middleweight world champion.”
“This is the opportunity I have been waiting for. The opportunity to achieve greatness inside the ring,” said Jacobs. “I have always believed I can beat Canelo, and on May 4th , I will get my chance to play it out. It’s been nearly four years since Canelo has faced an American challenger. It’s going to be a huge event where I believe I will cement myself as the best middleweight in the division.”
The fight for the WBC, IBF, WBA “super”, Ring Magazine and lineal middleweight titles will be shown live on DAZN. Alvarez had signed an 11 fight deal last year with the streaming network and Jacobs has now signed a 3 fight deal with Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN. More information about the location will come in the next few days.
