Jessie Vargas replaces Omar Figueroa as Broner’s opponent

Recent news has come around social media circles that Adrien Broner will be fighting Jessie Vargas on April 21st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The originally scheduled fight was Broner taking on Omar Figueroa Jr. but due to a shoulder injury suffered by Figueroa, he would not be able to fight on the April 21st date. Therefore, former welterweight champion Jessie Vargas will come in to replace Figueroa as the opponent for Broner. Vargas, who is 28-2 with 10 knockouts was likely to be the replacement for Figueroa as reported by Ring Magazine, and now it is official.

Vargas, whose last fight was a unanimous decision win against Aaron Herrera, held the WBO welterweight championship by defeating Sadam Ali in March 2016 at the DC Armory. He lost his first defense of that belt to Manny Pacquiao which was before his win over Herrera. Broner had his last fight in July 2017 where he lost by unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia at the Barclays Center. Now he returns to the same venue hoping to get that bad loss behind him.

This fight will be at a catchweight of 144 pounds, as Vargas was at the welterweight division and Broner had his last encounter in the super lightweight division. Broner has also been a champion at welterweight, but his two losses to Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter had him go down to the super lightweight division. He is currently 33-3 with 24 knockouts, but people are questioning if he is able to step up to win high-profile fights as throughout his career, he has acted like a high-profile celebrity. On April 21st, boxing fans will see if he can finally come through or if Vargas will be too much for him.
