Canelo tests positive for Clenbuterol

Multi-division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez tested positive for the drug Clenbuterol earlier this week according to Golden Boy Promotions. They issued a statement confirming that their fighter tested positive for the drug. Clenbuterol is a substance that is used to beef up livestock and is present in meat that is contaminated within the country of Mexico where Alvarez is from.

There were trace amounts of the drug detected in the positive test, so there will be additional tests conducted in the future. From now on, Alvarez will be training in the United States ahead of his upcoming rematch May 5th against Gennady Golovkin for the WBA, IBF, WBC, and lineal middleweight titles. Canelo expressed disappointment after receiving the results of the test.

“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” Canelo said. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”

He has agreed to submit samples randomly to VADA before the rematch with Golovkin happens.
